was sending free assault rifles to the mexican drug cartels that they then use to kill us. and here in new york mandatory jail time if you are arrested with a loaded gun. loaded illegal gun. sounds good. the problem? fewer than half of those arrested for illegal possession of loaded handguns even received a state prison sentence. mandatory all right. unless a judge doesn't think they are. you you could drive an 18 wheeler through that old interest of justice excuse to not jail someone. and now the president wants to have a dialogue and mental illness. we know the virginia tech shooter and the colorado movie theater shooter and the gabby giffords shooter each had serious mental problems or were declared to be dangerous. even the newtown shooter who played violent video games for days on end had mental problems. it is interesting that the president mentioned nothing about violent images and video games. if we ban assault rifles then shouldn't we ban the images of assault rifles in movies and video games? what is that you say? the first amendment protects free speech? of course, it does. and

.m. out west. i'm miguel marquez. if you're just tuning in, thanks for joining us. these are the top stories we're following in the cnn newsroom. new details about the murders of two military veterans, one a former navy s.e.a.l., chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield were shot and killed in ft. worth texas. the man who pulled the trigger is a veteran who kyle may have been trying to help with ptsd. susan candiotti joins us live with more. what do we know about how this happened? >> well, got some brand new information during the press conference. first of all, we learned about an alleged confession. and police say they think they also have found the murder weapon, when they describe as a semiautomatic handgun that was found at the suspect's house. let's back up a little bit. after the double shooting at that gun lodge, police say the suspected shooter who's 25-year-old eddie ray ralph took off in kyle's pickup truck. then they said that he went to his sister's house and told her and his brother what had happened, and then left that house. that's when the sister called the police

, everyone. i'm randi kaye. it's 8:00 on the east coast. thanks so much for starting your morning with us. iraqi insurgents called him the devil. the this morning the former navy s.e.a.l. who wrote about making more than 150 sniper kills is dead. cnn has learned chris kyle was shot to death at a gun range near ft. worth, texas, yesterday along with another man. kyle is perhaps best known for penning the book, american sniper. it details his four combat tours in iraq. staerted a foundation to help veterans battling posttraumatic stress disorder. the gunman accused of killing him was a former marine who suffered from ptsd. our pentagon correspondent barbara starr joins me by phone. barbara, you've been dicking into this. what more do you know? >> this sad story emerged late last night, randi. the pentagon is trying to assemble what they can at this point about the service record of chris kyle and the man taken into custody, 25 years old. he was caught by police in texas after a brief pursuit, has been arraigned on two counts of capital murder. another man was shot along with chris kyle at t
